March 16, 2005 Cemetery Study Committee

Memo

To: Marlene Larson and Kari Anderson
From: Robert L. Kufrin
Subject: Minutes for Cemetery Committee Meeting March 16, 2005 CORRECTED AND REVISED
Date: MARCH 22, 2005

The meeting was called to order at 6:30 at Marlene Larson’s home with Kari Anderson, Marlene Larson and Robert Kufrin present. The minutes of the meeting of March 10, 2005 were approved as presented.

The Committee discussed and agreed upon the following items:

#5: The Committee felt that for long term record keeping purposes that the Town Clerk should remain re-sponsible for all records. The Clerk should maintain two sets of records with one set at the Town Hall.

The Town Board should create a Cemetery Committee consisting of three members:
One Town Supervisor
One resident with an initial one year term
One resident with an initial three year term
Both residents with subsequent three year terms
The Cemetery committee would be responsible for the following:
1. Staking burial sites
2. Dealing with funeral homes on burial details
3. Reporting to the Clerk the details of all burials
4. Overseeing the maintenance and grounds keeping of the cemetery
5. Reporting to the Board on an annual basis on the cemetery operations
6. Making recommendations to the Board to improve the operations of the cemetery

In a matter unrelated to the tasks given to the Committee, it was felt that if an indigent death occurs in the Town then the burial may occur at the Cemetery at a grave site located at the Committee’s discretion.

#8 The Committee felt that two cremated remains could be interred in one grave site.

#9 The Committee felt that if an existing owner of a grave site wished to sell or transfer ownership of a grave site to anyone other than an immediate family member, the Town should have the right to purchase it back at the price originally paid for the grave site.

#10 The Committee felt that whichever days of the week or month that a funeral home was willing to conduct the burial ceremony, it should be acceptable to the Town as long as a member of the Cemetery Committee was able to stake out the site.

#6 The Committee felt that the sales of grave sites should be limited to no more than two grave sites per resident or four grave sites per married couple. This limit in conjunction with #8 would mean that eight burials could occur in those four grave sites. In addition, only members of a purchasers “immediate” family could be buried in those grave sites.

The Committee adjourned at 7:45. The next meeting will be held after direction is provided by the Town Board.
